Dr. Shauna Thornhill believes that one of the most impactful ways to advance optometry is by interacting in a meaningful way with the community. She and the team at Amarillo Vision Specialists strive to make a difference in the lives of their patients, and they are working hard to provide more than just eye exams.
With two locations at local area Wal-Mart stores, Amarillo Vision Specialists is providing quality eye care, promoting the importance of vision health and impacting the lives of the community it serves.
Dr. Thornhill and her staff have taken their passion for helping others beyond the walls of their practice by creating an annual "Free Eye Exam/Toy Drive Day." This event provides free eye exams to those who may not be able to afford one, in exchange for a small toy donation. The toys are then given to children in the community who are in need, a cause close to Dr. Thornhill’s heart—as a child she herself was a recipient of others’ generosity. In 2016, 2975 toys were donated and Dr. Thornhill and an associate performed nearly 240 free eye exams, making the event a huge success.
Dr. Thornhill is also involved with the Laura W. Bush Institute of Women’s Health and Leadership Amarillo, and currently serves as a charter member of Energeyes—a not-for-profit organization dedicated to empowering corporate optometrists with knowledge and resources in order to help them provide better patient care.
For Dr. Thornhill, it’s not enough to just improve her patients’ vision—she wants to help them live healthy and happy lives, a commitment that has helped make Amarillo Vision Specialists a 2017 Best Practice.
